Abstract

The joint use of a natural bioregulator, such as
Verticillium lecanii, and a selective insecticide could be advantageous to control the whitefly (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) in
integrated pest management programs. To study the in vitro compatibility of V. lecanii with the piretroid insecticide,
fenpropathrin, two assays were made:
In insecticide-treated solid media, and incubating a fungal suspensión of 108 conidia/mi with the piretroid during 16 h at
26°C, simulating an aspersión tank. Compatibility was assessed by determining the viability [colony forming units (CFU)
and germination], radial growth velocity, morphology, and sporulation, and the effect of fenpropathrin on the pathogenicity
of the fungus on whiteflies by a nymph bioassay reponed as a Fungal Growth and Development índex (FGDI). Results
showed a 45.6% inhibition of viability with CFU and of 43.0% with germination (P<0.05) in the assay simulating an
aspersión tank. No alterations by the piretroid were observed in radial growth, morphology, and sporulation. A delay in
fungal growth and development on the nymph bioassay was found (lower FGDI than the control) after exposing it to the
insecticide, suggesting a negative effect of fenpropathrin on V. lecanii pathogenicity. This is the first report in México
where the effect of a chemical insecticide on fungal pathogenicity is tested by this bioassay. Tank mixing of the fungus
with the piretroid should be avoided; rather the fungus and the insecticide should be aspersed separately.
