Abstract

The frequency of systemic mycosis diagnosed in the Hospital de Especialidades del
Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI (CMN Siglo XXI), del Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social
(IMSS), based on results of mycological examinations requested to our laboratory in the
period 1996 - 2006 was reviewed. One hundred and thirty six cases were registered, 101
caused by filamentous fungi and 35 caused by Cryptococcus spp. The more frequent
hyphomycosis were mucormycosis, aspergillosis and histoplasmosis (52, 32 and 14 cases,
respectively). Cryptococcosis was caused firstly by Cryptococcus neoformans (31 cases) and
in lesser frequency by other species as C. laurentii, C. gattii and C. terreus. Considering the
high mortality that systemic mycoses induce in the immunosuppressed patients, it is
necessary that in the high speciality hospitals these infections be prevented, diagnosed and
treated with opportunity.
