Part of a diagnosis on Mexican ftr wood-decay problems at the Nevado de Toluca National Park. State of Mexico,
was to determine rot-type of isolates from typical cases with three laboratory methods: the classical Baveodarnm's
test, Badcock's method, and a new sawdust-guaiacol technique. Seven isolates were brown-rollers (NT -I. NT -2,
NT-3, NT~A, NT~B. NT~C and NT-7), whereas one isolate was a white-rotter (NT-5). Only eight out of 151
repetitions gave dubious reactions, six after the Bavendamm's test, two with Badcock's method, and none with the
sawdust-guaiacol technique. Background and practical details of each method are discussed. Rot-type results were
useful for the identification of the brown-rot isolates as Fomitopsis pinicola, the white·rotter as Jleterobasidion
annosum , and also for the diagnosis of decay problems in trees.
