First report in Mexico on the Isolation of Verticillium lecanii from whitefly and in vitro pathogenicity tests on this insect

The entomopathogenic hyphomycete Verticillium lecanii
(Zimrn.) Viegas was isolated in M~xico from the nymphs (stages 2
and 3) of Trialeurodes vaporariorum and Bemisia tabaci, pests
known as whitefly, which attack very important crops in the
country's economy. In vitro pathogenicity bioassays were performed
by inoculating healthy nymphs with a suspension containing 3.2 x
106 conidiajml in 0.05% Tween 80, and incubating at 26°C for 10
days, both on glass slides contained in moist chambers, and on
plates made with agar previously washed and sterilized, contained
in Petri dishes; 92 and 100% parasitism were respect i ve!~
obtained. For the Hall tests, a suspension containing 1 x 10
conidiajml was applied onto healthy nymphs, placed on moist
filter paper contained in Petri dishes, which were also incubated
at 26°C for 10 days; 78 . 8% of parasitism was obtained with this
test. Results suggest that this fungus is potentially us eful for
the biological control of whitefly.
