Intraspecific variability of Lecanicillium lecanii (=Verticillium lecanii): Effect of temperature on growth

The effect of temperature (15, 25, 30 and 35°C) on the growth rate of six isolates of
insects and coffee rust (polyspore isolates), six monospore cultures derived from these
isolates, and six reference strains of Lecanicillium lecanii of different countries was assayed.
All studied fungi exhibited the highest growth rate at 25 °C (2.55 ± 0.43 mm/day); all showed
a better growth at 15 ((1.52 ± 0.23 mm/day) than at 30 °C (0.95 ± 0.67 mm/day); and no
fungal growth was observed at 35°C. Significant differences (p < 0.001) among growth rates
at 15, 25 and 30 °C of polyspore isolates, monospore cultures, and reference strains were
shown, as well as in the majority of original and monospore cultures, with the exception of
isolates EH-459 and EH-572 at 15 °C, EH-458 at 25 °C, and EH-457 at 25 and 30°C. The
difference of growth at the temperatures assayed among the different isolates showed the
intraspecific variability of L. lecanii
