Abstract

The causal agent of apple white rot was isolated from stems, branches, roots and basidiocarps on potato-dextrose-agar and
malt-agar culture media, and inoculated by various methods on young apple trees under greenhouse conditions and on
sterilized wood sections under laboratory conditions. Based on the characteristics of the basidiocarps, mycelium growth in
vitro, phenoloxidase production on malt-agar, and the absorbancy detection of these enzymes under the spectrophotometer,
the fungus was identified as Trametes versicolor (L.:Fr.) Pil<it (Polyporus versicolor L. :Fr. y Coriolus versicolor (L.:Fr)
Que!). Disease symptoms included papery bark, white rot and death of trees. It was widely distributed in Zacatlan and
Libres, Puebla and in Huayacocotla, Veracruz with up to 90% incidence in orchards more than 35 years old with deficient
management.
