In order to study the role played by fungi in the biodeterior;otion of colonial fa<;ades, fungi were isolated from the
dropptngs of Columba Iivia ptgcons nesting on the buildings. The physical and chemical characteristics of the stone
were determined. Cullures and electron microscopy studies revealed the presence of conidi a and fungal filaments on
the stone with gu~mo (WG). Guano-free stones (GF) were also inoculated with Mucor cin:ineloides and
C~vpiocuccu.< neoformans isolated from pigeons' droppings. Marked physical and chemical differences were found between WG and GF stone samples. Electron micr.,.,opy
revealed fungal filaments and conidia on tile inside of !be WG samples as well as structural alterations in stone
crystals from infected building material. The GF samples inoculmed with fungi showed similar structural changes
as those observed in \1/G samples. In conclnsion. the fungi that inhabit the pigeons' guano are a danger to the
conservat ion of historical buildings. We suggest that mechanical protection with nets, as well as maintaining a
strict control on the number of pigeons arc the two main strategies to solve this problem.
