Abstract

Gypsophila is an ornamental plant that has recently been
introduced to Mexico. This novel introduction into our country
poses certain problems in the productive process, mainly
diseases. A sudden wilt has been detected in the Perfecta variety
of this plant at the Joya ranch , municipality of Tepeji del R1o,
Hidalgo, with an incidence of 25%. This disease appeared mainly
with high humidity in t he soil after irrigation or heavy rain.
According to our results , this disease is caused by Phytophthora
cryptogea, although Rhizoc t onia sp. and Fusarium sp. were also
isolated. The last two fungi did not produce any demage on
inoculation. Moreover, eigth different bacterial strains were
also isolated, but none was pathogenic. As far as known, this i s
the first report of Ph. crypt ogea as a pathogen, causing demage
to gypsophila.
