Twe lve populations of t he State of Morelos, l ocated in a
endemic zone for actinomycetoma were studied, in order to isolate
human pathogenic a c tinomycetes from s o il . Thirty s amp les were
collected from each one, which included cultivation land,
streets, roads a nd courtyards. Soil samples were d iluted and
cultured in Sabouraud dextrose agar wi th a nt ibiotics . An
edaphological study was also realized for each sample. Results
showed tha t from 360 samples, 114 {40%) contained pathogenic
a ctinomycetes : 75 {20.8%) Nocardia brasiliensis; 30 {8.3%) N.
as teroides; 22 (6 .2%) N. otitidis- cavarum; 10 {2 . 8%) Actinomadura
madurae; 3 (0 . 8%) A. pelletieri, and 4 (1.1%) streptomyces
somaliensis . Three populations from a nearby non-endemic zone
were chosen as a control group, where only t wo from 90 soil
samples (2 . 2%) yielded S. somaliensis isolation . The
edaphological s tudy showed no relevant variation between the soil
o f both endemic and non-endemic zones , whereas c limate, altitud,
and vege tation were found completely different from both regions .
The t ype of soil was non det erminant ~or the frequency of
acti nomycetes found.
