Micromorphological aspects of the white rot caused by some wood-decaying fungi on tropical woods under natural conditions

This paper describes the micromorphological damage caused by the action of
white rot fungi (Pleurotus roseopileatus, Polyporus occidental is, Poria sp. and Tranutes corrugala)
in cellular elements of tropical hardwoods under natural conditions.
Observations were made on microslide preparations. Two differential stainning
techniques were used, safranine-picroaniline blue and safraninefast green, and a technique
of chemical maceration with dilute sodium hipochloride. Observations showed
that fibers had less hyphae and more damage, vessel elements had more hyphae had
less damage, and parenchyma cells had a direct relation between hyphae abundance
and damage severity.
