Mycophagy in Neotoma Mexicana (Mammalia, Rodentia)

A study on the mushrooms and lichens found in three dens of the field rat Neotoma
mexicana madrensis Goldman is discussed. The observations were made in the State of
Durango (NW of México). 234 carpophores were collected of which 18 genera in 21
species were identified. Only 40% of the material was not identified, but it belongs to
fragments of Agaricales. This group was the most numerous in the three dens. Only
two species of Scleroderma in the Gasteromycetes, one species of Peziza in the Ascomycetes
and one lichen (Everniastrum cirrhatum) were found. It is interesting to observe that
between the studied fungí, were found poisonous species as Amonita, Naematoloma,
Inocybe, Cortinaríus, and Scleroderma, in concordance with the bibliography as Fogel &
Trappe (1978) who reported even Amonita phalloides and A. muscaria and others in the
feedings habitat of small mammals. This is the first report of mycophagy by small
animáis in México.
