It has bcen demonstraicd that storage hmgi can cause !oss of viability in cereal
seeds, such as maize. However, in seed with a high oil contení, ihe loss of
germination is mainly due to intrinsic factors, which are enhanccd by high
moisture content and storage temperature. The practical way of rontroling these
fungí, is by means of keeping the moisture and temperature ai unfavourable

limitations, mainly for the rural arcas.
Thereforc, it is desirable to carry out research to allow thc dcvdopmcrit of
the adcquatc tcchnology; such as the test and use of fungicidcs, the brceding for
resistancc to develop crops witli seeds which can stand adverse storage condi
tions fot longcr periods, as wcll as to improvc the rural storage syslcms.
