Abstract

The presence of dermatophytes in the scalp of both clean and uiiclean persons
was investigated. The sample was taken by rubbing the head with a piece
of rug. Of the 308 persons sampled, 27 gave positive isolates (8.76%). A notable
difference in the frequency of isolated dermatophytes was observed between
clean persons (1.72%) and iinclean persons (13.02%). With the exception
of one case, in which T. mentagrophytes was identified, the rest of the
isolated corresponded to T. ionsurans. Youirg and adult persons presented a
higher frequency of positive isolates (25.0% and 21.42%, respectively) as compared
to the frequency of isolates obtained l'rom children (11.11%).
