The pathogenic fungi of the spittlebug in Mexico, II. Germination, growth and sporulation

Taking in cunsideration the importance of the utílization of fungí in biological
control of pests and knovving the inefficiency and problems of chemical insecticides,
the prescnt work has been undertaken to demónstrate the influence of different
physical and nutrítional factors on the growth, germination and sporulation of two
Entomophthorales Erynia neoaphidis and Conidiobolus majar, fungi which in a'
natural way attack predatory insects (Cercopideae) of cattle pastures: Aeneolamia
albofasciata and Prosapia simulans commonly known as spittlebug. The resulta
obtained indícate that better growth, germination and sporulation of these microorganisms
are reached in pH's cióse to 7, warm temperatures inherent to tropical
climates (24 28°C), and simple culture médiums vvitli different sugars (glucose,
maltose, fructose) and polysaccharides as carbón sources, as well as complex mixtures
(yeast extract, mixtures of aminoacids) as nitrogen sources. These few nutrítional
demanda could allow the mass production of these fungi to be accomplished easily
at a low cost for the purpose of broad distribution as biological competitors
